If you are building a new property or business premises, or developing a generation site, you may need a new electricity supply for the site. While it can be a complicated process, we’re here to make it simple. We’ll help you understand the process for how to get a new connection installed. With our decades of experience in the industry, you’ll find that setting up a new connection is simpler, faster and cheaper than ever with the Switch Business Utilities team helping you every step of the way.
Companies that own and operate the infrastructure that delivers electricity to your premises are called distribution network operators (DNOs). Most are regional monopolies, so you don’t choose your DNO; it’s based on your location.
Independent distribution network operators (IDNOs) also own parts of the network.
To find out who your DNO is click on the button below and enter your password. This will bring up all of the details required to start the process.
There are 5 important steps to take when starting a new connection:
The DNO must calculate the cost of the work using its connection charging methodology. Each DNO publishes this on their website.
Once you have agreed to the pricing and a statement of works, The DNO will carry out the installation and provide you with a Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN).
This number will be required to identify your electrical supply and used to install your meter.
Once you have your MPAN, we can start to help find the right deal for your business and as we are a whole of market broker, we have access to the entire portfolio of pricing from every supplier.

We know which suppliers will deal with and which industry sector we need to talk to.
This has only been amplified further during the global pandemic with suppliers becoming far more risk averse when choosing to take on a supply contract.
We have access to the tools required to ensure we give you the right advise and take the pressure off you having to deal with suppliers, meter engineers and chasing these huge organisations for updates.
We do this for you, so you don’t have to! And we search the whole market for the right deal for you.
In order to get started all we require is a signed Letter of Authority (LOA) which we send you to sign. This is not a contract nor is it a promise to buy.
It’s simply a letter that gives us the ability to go to the market on your behalf and apply for prices.
You are not obligated nor committed to take any of the prices we provide.
Once we have the LOA, we can get to work using our long-term relationships to get you the most competitive pricing available.
We will then present these prices to you for your consideration. We will in most cases only present pricing where the supplier has already confirmed that they will take the supply contract on meaning the credit checks have been completed and passed.
This gives you peace of mind that you won’t be told at the last minute that the supplier has declined the application.
Once you have accepted the pricing and signed a supplier contract we can then get this processed and work with the suppliers meter installation team to arrange the swift installation of your meter.
